The endless possibilities are exciting!
Rhythm, mood, and tempo come to mind when listening to our favorite music. When painting, an artist uses color, value, texture and line to hit the right notes while composing a painting. My approach is intuitive and free flowing. The use of color, value and line to achieve harmony or discord sets the tempo within a piece. The results are varying rhythms that mark an artist’s unique music.
As a mixed media artist with plenty of experience, I’m still excited when beginning a painting. That blank canvas is waiting for what you’ve got to say. Here is where I let intuition take the lead and trust my gut with the experience I’ve gained. Some cobalt blue here, a pop of cadmium orange there—I’m on my way to the dance!
Can you hear the music?
Here is a preview of three pieces I have been working on for my upcoming show at Avondale Arts,
and what inspired them.
“The Pinks Have It" 8x8 inches, Oil and Cold Wax on panel.
The color compliments of orange and blue are a favorite of mine. Texture, strong value range along with horizontal and vertical shapes give structure to this piece.
“Feeling Like a Kid Again” 12x12 inches, Oil and Cold Wax on panel.
Using a similar palette, the lighthearted carefree shapes convey a sense of whimsy.
“After the Storm” 6x12 inches, Oil and Cold Wax on panel.
Strong sensuous color and slashing diagonal line creates drama.
All in all a lot of play and fun is happening in the studio this summer and the time is just flying by.
My latest creative expressions will be on display for you to experience later this month at:
Avondale Arts, Watch Hill, RI.
