Mixing it up in the Studio

Spring takes it’s sweet time coming to New England. Waiting for warmer weather was time for some creative exploration. Primarily a painter, I like to mix it up once in a while to experiment with other mediums. Let me show you what I was up to over the winter in my cozy studio.

Small color explorations came first using my creamy oil painting sticks. Mixing the succulent colors directly on the paper was the challenge. Color as well as the textures created is the fascination here.

I pulled out my Gelli plate next. Using this plate is an easy and fun way to produce monoprints  without a press. Using tissue and rice papers, working with organic and found materials, these papers can produce the most detailed patterns and textures. The delicacy and transparency of these papers is wonderful on their own or used as collage elements.

Color. Imprinted paper. Time to dive into my paper stash and design some collages. I have oodles of papers I covet and collected over the years. Beautiful little snippets with saturated colors of every hue, monoprinted rice papers with intricate patterns and designs, crops from works on paper.  I can’t throw them away!

They are perfect for collage, so I decided to begin a sweet little series for  Instagram challenge. Working mostly in pairs I challenged myself to create and post a finished collage every day. It was so much fun!

Hers’s one all dressed up in a standard 8x10in frame.

Changing Tempo

Expressing your voice as a painter.
The endless possibilities are exciting!

Rhythm, mood, and tempo come to mind when listening to our favorite music. When painting, an artist uses color, value, texture and line to hit the right notes while composing a painting. My approach is intuitive and free flowing. The use of color, value and line to achieve harmony or discord sets the tempo within a piece. The results are varying rhythms that mark an artist’s unique music.

As a mixed media artist with plenty of experience, I’m still excited when beginning a painting. That blank canvas is waiting for what you’ve got to say.  Here is where I let intuition take the lead and trust my gut with the experience I’ve gained. Some cobalt blue here, a pop of cadmium orange there—I’m on my way to the dance!

Can you hear the music?
Here is a preview of three pieces I have been working on for my upcoming show at Avondale Arts,
and what inspired them.

“The Pinks Have It" 8x8 inches, Oil and Cold Wax on panel.
The color compliments of orange and blue are a favorite of mine. Texture, strong value range along with horizontal and vertical shapes give structure to this piece.

“
Feeling Like a Kid Again” 12x12 inches, Oil and Cold Wax on panel.
Using a similar palette, the lighthearted carefree shapes convey a sense of whimsy.

“After the Storm
” 6x12 inches, Oil and Cold Wax on panel.
Strong sensuous color and slashing diagonal line creates drama.

What are you up to this summer ?

Here's what's happening in my studio

As a mixed media artist I’ve enjoyed working with a variety of materials - inks, pastels, monotype and collage. Always looking for a new challenge, I was introduced to Oil and Cold Wax and surprise, surprise I'm hooked!

What's lighting me up with this medium...

...the amazing textures

Picture
...the rich complex layers of color which are revealed when scraping away layers. It's so exciting to find what’s waiting below the surface.

Picture
..did I mention the alluring consistency when the paint and wax are combined? Creamy and buttery so enticing to layer on!
Picture
...and I love experimenting with new color combinations, tools and stencils.
